About the Diploma

The Undergraduate Diploma in Computer Science provides students with a comprehensive foundation in computer science principles, theories, and practical skills. Designed to prepare students for entry-level positions in the field of computing or further academic study, the program offers a diverse curriculum encompassing key areas of computer science.

Assessment:

When it comes to assessment methods, we have included quite a variety that will allow learners with different learning styles and abilities to complete the programme successfully. Students will also have to prepare individual and team reports and presentations, apart from written and multiple-choice examinations. Most modules have a heavy assignment component which vary from term papers to implementing algorithms stemming from the unit.

Entry Requirements

Entry Requirements:

  1. Proficiency in English language skills- IELTS level/grade 6, B2 level of English or the student’s country equivalent, as the course will involve reading technical materials and communicating concepts effectively.
  2. Post secondary Education (Pure Maths and/Or Computing A level) (MATSEC) or equivalent OR
  3. A degree at level 6 (MQF/EQF) or equivalent in another subject together with a Post secondary Education (Pure Maths and/Or Computing A level) (MATSEC)
    OR
  4. 10 years of work experience in an IT related job paired with a strong interest in the field, together with a minimum level 4 qualification

Module outcomes

Introduction to Formal Logic

  • Define key terms and concepts in formal logic, such as propositions, truth values, logical operators, and inference rules.
  • Recall the basic principles and rules of logical reasoning, including modus ponens, modus tollens, and truth tables.
  • Recognize different types of logical fallacies and errors in reasoning.

Introduction to Programming with Python

  • Explain the purpose and functionality of different Python data structures, including lists, tuples, dictionaries, and sets.
  • Interpret code snippets and understand how they execute within the Python interpreter.
  • Comprehend the concept of object-oriented programming (OOP) and its implementation in Python.

Computer Architecture and Operating Systems

  • Explain the principles and mechanisms of computer system architecture, including von Neumann architecture, instruction execution cycle, and memory hierarchy.
  • Interpret the roles and responsibilities of an operating system, including process management, memory management, file system management, and I/O management.

Introduction to Databases

  • Explain the purpose and significance of databases in modern information systems, including data storage, retrieval, and manipulation.
  • Develop knowledge on and explain the relational model and its components, including entities, attributes, relationships, and constraints.
  • Interpret database schemas, entity-relationship diagrams (ERDs), and other visual representations of database structures.

Scientific reading and writing in Computer Science

  • Develop knowledge on and explain the structure and organization of research papers and technical reports.
  • Comprehend the purpose and significance of literature reviews in identifying gaps and trends in computer science research.
  • Interpret and explain the findings, methodologies, and conclusions presented in scientific literature.

 

Software Engineering

  • Ability to create software requirements and specifications based on stakeholder needs
  • Develop knowledge on and explain of different software development life cycles and methodologies, and ability to select the most appropriate for a given project
  • Ability to design software systems and architectures that meet performance, scalability, and maintainability requirements
